Detailed Walkthrough
Talk to the Gardener. If you accepted the Ringleader’s offer, you need to decline the Gardener’s hint that he wants a bribe, otherwise your Sapless Potions quest will remain marked as failed. If you declined the Ringleader’s offer, you need to accept the Gardener’s hint that he wants a bribe, again, if you don’t, your Sapless Potions quest will be marked as failed. The bribe itself is a very small percentage of your current gold (around 200 gold if you have 250,000 gold), so don't worry about not having enough to pay him.
Once you have accepted or declined the Gardener’s hint, talk to him again. If you accepted and bribed him his memory will suddenly recover and he will tell you where Renik is.
If you declined and refused to bribe him, he will congratulate you on your morals and then tell you where Renik is.
Renik’s weekend residence is a good way north from Teardrop Hamlet, and the roads are packed with large groups of wandering enemies. For that reason, unless you want to fight pretty much every inch of the way there, it is often easier (not to mention both shorter and quicker) to head cross country until you reach the river.
If you want to follow the roads you can either take the dirt track northeast from the Resurrection Monument to Sonnenwind, then West out of Sonnenwind until you come to a junction and turn north, following that road over the bridge and continuing north until you reach Renik’s weekend residence on the right. Or, you can follow the main road west and turn north onto a dirt track just before the bridge over the river, following this road north until you come to a junction and branch sharply west, before turning north again, following this road over the next bridge and continuing north until you reach Renik’s weekend residence on the right.
If you’d rather go cross country, you want to follow the main road west, turning north across country past the first T-Energy hub you see. Keep heading north until you find a dirt track running east-west. Cross this heading north, keeping to the left (west) of the trees until you reach the river. The bridge across is just to the left (west). Cross over this and then follow the road north until you reach Renik’s weekend residence on the right.
Head inside the house and talk to Renik the Village Priest, then kill him when he becomes hostile.
You can now return to Telwan the Merchant for your hard-earned reward.
Logbook Entry
Notes
- Tip: the fastest way to return to town after killing Renik is by activating the Resurrection Monument before you leave the area, then teleporting back to it (F12 by default).
- Tip: Your decisions when accepting and declining in the two conversations during this quest will determine whether you succeed or fail the first quest. If you accept the Ringleader's offer, you must decline to bribe the Gardener. If you decline the Ringleader's offer, you must accept and bribe the Gardener.
- Bug: although the quest Renik the Priest is a 'prerequisite' for this quest, you will not receive that quest if you accepted the Racketeer Ringleader's offer in the Sapless Potions quest. You will instead carry out the same steps as described in the quest Renik the Priest, but as part of the Sapless Potions quest. You will still be able to talk to the Gardener and receive this quest in that case.
- Bug: sometimes Renik the Village Priest will fail to spawn or will spawn under the terrain; reloading the game can sometimes solve this.
- Note: Certain bugs in this quest have been fixed since v2.34 (PC), which may have resulted in characters who had started, but not completed, the quest before patching in being unable to complete the quest.
- If you are following the Shadow path, Cathy, the quest giver for the If the Reputation is Down the Gutter... quest is standing right outside this house.
- If you are playing with the Ice and Blood expansion and the Community Patch, this quest can no longer be failed. It is also treated as one quest in the log book instead of a chain quest.
